GIVING BACK
The Compassionate Heart vision was founded by its Executive Director, Donna Bunce, after her first child was diagnosed cognitively impaired and mildly autistic. As she watched her teenage son struggle with friendships, relationships, and social situations, she dreamed of a place where he and others with disabilities could find friends, acceptance, and a place to have fun. In 2006, God answered that prayer, leading her to create Compassionate Heart Ministries. Since then, hundreds of families with loved ones ages 14-35 with mild to moderate disabilities have found a home and a family of support at Compassionate Heart Ministries!
Kids’ Food Basket is a grassroots, community solution to childhood hunger. We began over a decade ago by serving 125 kids each school day through our Sack Supper program and now serve nearly 8,800 kids each weekday in West Michigan. We believe healthy food is a right—not a privilege—for every child. But not all kids have access to nutritious meals and therefore experience hunger and undernourishment. Kids’ Food Basket exists to fundamentally disrupt the social determinants of health for children by alleviating immediate hunger needs and fostering long term positive impact through life-affirming, daily nourishment and education.
At age 10, Krista & Dave Mason’s son Ben was diagnosed with autism and nonverbal communication. As Ben grew, they recognized a need for their son and those like him to have a place to thrive as adults. While similar organizations embrace a “Live, Learn, Play” model, Krista wanted to ensure those with developmental differences seeking a home in the church could experience the full joy of participation in a faith community without judgment or isolation from the larger community. Today, Ben’s Hope offers not only a thriving neighborhood cherished as home by 30 adults with developmental differences, but also a community for Christ’s followers of all abilities, now 400 members strong.
